Description

Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.

The astonishing natural wonders of the rugged coastline and sparkling water of the Sea of Cortez is renowned throughout the world. With an average temperature of 60°F in the winter and 80°F in the summer it's the perfect spot for experienced and novice divers to jump in and explore.

During your half-day adventure you'll snorkel in the marine-rich waters of Gaviota Island then relax on one of the soft, sandy beaches around Balandra Bay. Remember to wear a bathing suit under your clothes, bring along adequate sun protection and don't forget to bring along an underwater camera to capture all the colorful marine life and extraordinary sights. The first part of your thrilling excursion begins at the pier where you'll board your awaiting snorkel boat.

Then, you'll travel 30 minutes across the turquoise waters to Gaviota Island. As you approach the island you'll notice that it's not full of swaying palm trees but covered with birds. The island is a massive volcanic rock, which makes it a natural refuge for hundreds of seabirds. Depending on the time of year, you may see blue-footed boobies, yellow-footed gulls, and great blue herons. After a brief orientation from a team of skilled trainers in how to properly use your snorkel equipment, you'll enter the water for an enjoyable 50-minute dive (snorkeling gear will be provided). What you see will amaze you - this underwater paradise is filled with an array of anemones in colors that rival a box of crayons. Little sergeant majors (distinctive with its five vertical black stripes) and lobsters are among the abundant sea life that you'll encounter.

Then, you'll surface and climb back aboard your vessel and head towards your next destination. Balandra Bay lies just a short distance from La Paz and is home to eight inlets, a coral reef, and beautiful beaches. But Balandra Bay is most famous for its unusual rock formation called Mushroom Rock, or El Hongo by the locals. Once you disembark, you'll have a snack of fruit, chips and cookies. Then, you'll have two-and-a-half hours to relax on the white sand beach, gaze out at the vivid turquoise water, take a hike in the low-lying mountains, or snorkel in the salt lagoon teeming with thousands of fish. You'll find that the water is so shallow here that you can walk across to the volcanic cliffs that run down to the shore or to the mangroves that encircle the bay.

Then, you'll return to your awaiting vessel, which will whisk you back to the pier.
