What you will visit:
Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary
Derived from an Aboriginal word that means "native companion," Bonorong is a wildlife sanctuary, home to some of Australia's most famous natives, such as koalas, Tasmanian devils and wombats, along with kangaroos and wallabies. Just 30 minutes outside of Hobart, this wildlife sanctuary is run by a dedicated staff committed to returning healthy animals to back into the wild. For over 20 years, the sanctuary has promoted its mission of reducing rates of extinction by raising community awareness. Bonorong allows many of the animals in its care to roam freely in natural habitats, including Forester kangaroos, which respond to hand feeding. Knowledgeable naturalist guides are on hand to answer questions and to assist with animal interactions.
Shene Estate
A visit to the 19th-century Shene Estate takes you back in time. As you approach this country estate, which includes a still-working 4,500-acre black Angus cattle and sheep farm, admire its elegant grandeur, a monument to early colonialist Gamaliel Butler's wealth and position in the colony. Participate in a behind-the-scenes property tour, guided by a family member, which includes access to the Georgian farmhouse, Gothic stables, barn, servants' quarters, dairy and outbuildings.
Richmond
Nestled within farmland and wine country, Richmond is a beautifully preserved Georgian village. Established in 1825, five years before Port Arthur, Richmond is a genuine village of slate and cobblestone, handmade brick and mellow stone, cottages and manors. Explore the historic old jail and many of the well-preserved buildings that have been converted into shops, galleries and tearooms. Richmond is also home to Australia's oldest bridge, church and jail, where one of its infamous inmates was convict Ikey Solomon, said to be the model for Dickens' character Fagin in Oliver Twist.
What you will see along the way:
Gaze out the window as your motorcoach ride takes winding roads past lush countryside, rolling hills and small farms en route to the historic town of Richmond in the center of the Coal River Valley.
Wine tasting:
During this delightful day, you'll visit a local vineyard for wine tasting at the cellar door. Meet the friendly team whose passion is growing some of the region's finest wine.
Photo Opportunity:
Grab your camera for Rosny Point Lookout, where panoramic views of Hobart and Mt. Wellington abound.
Snack:
After the tour of Shene Estate, enjoy a substantial morning tea of sandwiches, homemade cakes and tea.
Special Notes:
Passengers must be over the age of 18 to participate in the wine tasting. The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry have advised that any passenger visiting the Bonorong Wildlife Conservation Centre must wash their shoes upon return to the ship for biosecurity reasons. This footwear will then need to be presented at the New Zealand Customs and Agriculture & Forestry Inspection which will take place during the cruise.
