What you will visit:
Dun Laoghaire (walking tour)
The seaside town of Dun Laoghaire, nestled on the east coast of Ireland, is a tender port and is an approximately 30-minute drive from Dublin. Dun Laoghaire gets its name from the Irish translation Fort (Dún) of Laoghaire, as it was once the seat of King Laoghaire, the ancient High King of Ireland. Its focal point is its lovely harbor, widely recognized as one of the finest man-made harbors. The first stone of the harbor was laid in 1817, and it was finished in 1842.
What you will see along the way:
A walk through pretty Dun Laoghaire introduces its historical and cultural highlights. Enjoy views of the Town Hall, erected in 1879, one of the last public buildings to be constructed in the 19th century and showcasing Romanesque style architecture. Stroll up Marine Road and onto George's Street to reach the Oratory. After refreshments, continue onto Queen's Road, named for Queen Victoria's visit in 1900. Admire the monument to George IV, who visited the town in 1821, and take in more highlights when you return to the pier. Fun fact: The seaside walking scene from the film Michael Collins, starring Liam Neeson, was filmed on Dun Laoghaire's east pier.
Snack:
Built in 1863, the Royal Marine Hotel is the perfect setting for tea, coffee and scones. These atmospheric surroundings have played host to heads of state, kings, queens and celebrities like Charlie Chaplin and Frank Sinatra.
