WHAT YOU VISIT
Ghent by Canal Cruise
Once aboard the canal boat, on-board commentary offers city history and points out areas of interest. Along the canal, you'll see buildings that line the canal like the Old Guild Halls with gabled rooftops and decorative facades built for the town's boatmen, bricklayers, corn-measurers, fishmongers and grain traders. Then, you'll glide past the impressive Gravensteen, once the residence of the Counts of Flanders from 1180 to 1353; the old Fish Market and 13th-century monasteries previously inhabited by the Augustins and Dominicans.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
Once in the canal boat, you'll cruise past the city's highlights, allowing for photo ops from the comfort of your seat. One sight not to be missed is Gravensteen, also known as Castle of the Counts; built by Philip of Alsace, count of Flanders, its construction was based on the fortresses he saw during the Crusades while fighting in the Holy Land.

SHOPPING
Once in the center of Ghent, you'll disembark for an hour of free time. Enjoy shopping for fine chocolates or Flemish lace or, for those with a sweet tooth, purchase a sweet confection called an "Antwerpseh." Made in the shape of hands, these traditional biscuits are baked with almonds and filled with marzipan.

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
The approximate 45-minute bus ride to Ghent takes you through a landscape of city streets and charming Flemish countryside.
