Bruges may look like the setting of a princess-themed Hollywood movie but this fairy tale city, located on the coast of the North Sea, was the busiest seaport in the world. Prosperity in the Middle Ages led to a building boom and the city's glorious architecture, plazas, canals and passageways are a treasured testament to its Golden Age.
Experience the beauty that is Bruges with a guided walking tour through the capital city's historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Your half-day adventure begins after you lace up your walking shoes, grab your camera, and board your motorcoach for the short drive to the heart of Bruges. As you wind your way around this beautifully-preserved medieval city you can't help but be enchanted by the stonework on many of the impressive buildings. Like fine Belgian lace, the details are distinguished by intricate designs and patterns.
Once you arrive in Old Town, follow your knowledgeable guide to the Belfry of Bruges, one of the city's most prominent landmarks. Standing 272 feet high, the 775-year-old tower once served as an observation post for spotting fires and other dangers. (exterior view only)
Bruges was once known for its many guilds and the Town Hall, built between 1376 and 1420, is one of the oldest in the Low Countries. Surrounding the hall are picture-perfect buildings that date back to the late 17th century. Note the ornate gabled roofs topped with statues; each unique building once housed the guild offices of Bruges's bakers, brewers, and other shopkeepers. (exterior view only)
Have your camera ready for one of the square's most notable sights, such as the Basilica of the Holy Blood. Originally built in the Romanesque style in the 12th century by a Crusader to house the drops of Christ's blood, the sacred structure was redesigned in a Gothic style 300 years later. Gleaming sculpted statues of golden knights adorn the façade while the stunning 18th century stained glass windows depict the sovereigns who reigned over the County of Flanders from 1342 to 1780. (exterior view only)
You may be thirsty after all this sightseeing, so your guide will then lead you to a delightful local café, where you will be introduced to a wonderful variety of Belgian beers.
After your delicious beer tasting, explore Bruges (approximately one hour) and shop for souvenirs like local hand-made chocolates and Flemish lace before rejoining your motorcoach and heading back to port.
