What you will visit:

Stikine River by Jet Boat
Venture deep into Alaska's untamed wilderness on this 3.5-hour jet-boat expedition along the storied Stikine River. Revered by the Tlingit as "The Great River," the Stikine winds from British Columbia's highlands through rugged mountains, dense forests, and glacier-carved valleys before spilling into the Inside Passage. Accessible only by jet boat, its lower stretches reveal a labyrinth of channels teeming with wildlife. Keep an eye out for moose, bears, wolves, and even the occasional mountain lion. Watch for bald eagles and migratory shorebirds overhead as well as harbor seals lounging on sandbars. Aboard your heated, covered vessel, you'll cruise beneath snow-draped peaks and past waterfalls. Conditions permitting, your captain will guide you into the waters of Shakes Lake, where the icy face of Shakes Glacier awaits.

What you will see along the way:
As you travel along the lower Stikine River, one of only a few rivers to cut through the towering Coast Mountains, you'll be immersed in a land shaped by glaciers, wildlife, and centuries of history. Stretching over 400 miles from British Columbia's Spatsizi Plateau to its delta near Wrangell, the Stikine flows from an area nearly the size of Switzerland. This dynamic river corridor, known to the Tlingit as "The Great River," has long served as a passageway for wildlife and people alike. Look skyward to spot bald eagles perched high above or soaring in search of prey. Depending on conditions, you may also cruise into Shakes Lake, where glacial ice meets water in dramatic fashion.

Schedule

Special Notes

This tour is conducted aboard a twin-powered jet boat featuring comfortable bus-style seating. There are no restrooms on board, so this excursion is not recommended for guests who require frequent restroom access. There is a very basic wilderness rest stop available; however, reaching it requires navigating a steep, narrow ramp from the boat's bow and walking along an uneven wilderness path. Please keep this in mind when booking. For safety and preservation reasons, a maximum of 12 guests are allowed ashore at one time. Walking on the glacier is not permitted. Access to Shakes Glacier is dependent on seasonal conditions. High water levels, timing, and the severity of the previous winter may limit glacier access, particularly in May and September. Weather and river conditions can be unpredictable. Wildlife sightings are common but cannot be guaranteed. Insect repellent is strongly recommended. Guests should bring cameras, binoculars, and a heavy jacket, as temperatures near the glacier can be quite cold.
