WHAT YOU VISIT
Wakayama Castle
Originally built in 1585 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi who successfully unified Japan, the castle's main purpose was to strengthen the warlord's hold over the southern region of Kansai and command the Kii Peninsula. Situated atop of Mt. Torafusu in the heart of the city, the grounds and gardens surrounding the castle are almost as spectacular as the architecture of the feudal fortress itself. Although World War II bombing destroyed most of the original castle buildings, a faithful reconstruction has successfully recreated an aura of power and authority. The castle's central tower displays weapons and armor worn by samurai warriors during the Edo period and the main tower offers panoramic views of the city and Wakayama Bay.
Miyama Battery
Constructed during the Meiji Period (1868 to 1912), the fortress's observation deck boasts sweeping views of the island of Tomogashima and the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, which stretches over the Akashi Strait linking the city of Kobe on the Japanese mainland of Honshu to Iwaya on Awaji Island.
Awashima-jinja Shrine
Believed to date back to the 4th century, the shrine is shrouded in superstition. According to Japanese tradition, dolls have souls or the power to influence human lives and are not to be discarded carelessly. Every year, thousands of dolls are brought to the shrine, which currently holds 20,000 dolls and figurines. And every year on March 3rd, the shrine hosts the Girl's Day Festival. Dating back to 1687, dolls are set afloat on boats until they are sent down from river to sea, taking negativities and bad spirits away with them.
