Your spirit of adventure will reach new heights on this easy half-day excursion across Garibaldi Pass, for views of Lago Escondido, and Las Cotorras. The dramatic scenery will keep you on the edge of your seat as your route climbs from sea level through a succession of river valleys to the highest point in the southern Andes Mountains.

Along the way, soak up fascinating details about the remote island that was once inhabited by aborigines, gold diggers, prisoners, missionaries, and castaways. With the insight of your experienced guide, picture what it must have been like in 1520 when the first European, Ferdinand Magellan, sailed around the tip of the continent and into the annals of history. On his way to circumnavigating the globe and proving the world was round; Magellan charted a course through the strait that now bears his name. Gazing out on huge bonfires that lit up the sky, he christened the island Tierra del Fuego, the "Land of Fire."

Reflect on all this and more as you climb higher and higher transitioning from riverine to alpine habitat and keeping an eye out for beaver dams, peat bogs and a host of birds and animals. Arriving at an altitude of nearly 1,200 feet, you'll enjoy stunning photo opportunities. Garibaldi Pass looks out over Escondido Lake shimmering against a backdrop of lush forest and cradled by the Alvear Mountains. Grab your camera for great shots of the iridescent lake and its magnificent surroundings. And a stop for drinks and finger sandwiches at Las Cotorras refuge, located in the winter sports area of the Andes, adds the finishing touch!

On your return trip to Ushuaia through exquisite mountain and valley tableaus, your guide's informative commentary continues. In Ushuaia explore the Museo Maritimo, a museum housed in a National Historical Monument, that was the former prison of Ushuaia. The building actually contains four museums. One covers the maritime history of the Argentine Navy with an amazing treasure trove of models; one feathers exhibits on Antarctic discovery and research; one features fine art with a nautical theme; and the last details the history of the old prison, and how it became a forced settlement in such a remote and freezing area.
