Ushuaia is an open door to wonder. The southernmost city in the world, the township closest to Antarctica and the outpost cradled by the last peaks of the Andes mountains and the Beagle Channel (named for Charles Darwin's ship, HMS Beagle).
Ushuaia is also the departure point for a strenuous half-day excursion in Tierra Mayor Natural Reserve. With the kind of wild, untamed beauty that can stop you in your tracks, it is the ideal setting for a two-hour guided trek through a magical, mythical, nature realm.
Set off from a remote cabin in Refugio Nunatak with your guide and learn about the remarkable flora and fauna of Tierra del Fuego. A lush lenga forest, a high deciduous beech (N. pumilio) native to the region, forms a leafy canopy and frames dramatic views of peat bogs and beaver dams.
Keep an eye out for some of the different species of terrestrial mammals that inhabit Tierra del Fuego. There are foxes, beavers, rabbits and muskrats; some of which have been introduced into the region to the detriment of the native habitat. And the plentiful birdlife includes cara-caras, Austral Parakeets, condors and many other species unique to the southern hemisphere.
Upon your return to the cabin, sit down to a delightful snack of tea, coffee or mate cocido with sandwiches and apple pie. Surely you've worked up an appetite during your eventful two-hour hike!
When everyone is ready, you'll re-board your motorcoach for the scenic return drive to your ship in Ushuaia. The capital of Tierra del Fuego (Land of Fire) breathes history, culture and Fuegian hospitality. Few places that are this remote are this inviting.
