Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world and the capital of Tierra del Fuego, is your departure point for a strenuous half-day excursion you´re sure to remember for years to come. Step aboard a 4WD vehicle for the scenic drive from the pier to the staging point for your 4-wheel-drive Safari into Tierra Mayor Natural Reserve.
Your guides will drive you through an action-packed off-road safari along a narrow lumberjack trail. Tierra Mayor Natural Reserve, with the kind of wild, untamed beauty that can move you to tears, is a nature lover´s dream. Travel under a leafy canopy of lenga (N. pumilio), a deciduous beech tree that has been harvested for its fine wood by generations of Fuegian lumberjacks.
A brief stop is made in Tierra Mayor Winter Sport Centre, where you will be able to see husky dogs that are used during the winter time to pull the sledges. Continue your safari through the wilderness and at the end of path, you´ll find a small woodcutter´s cabin where you´ll enjoy a warm Fuegian welcome with a hearty lumberjack snack. The forest is a rich habitat for a variety of unique southern hemisphere animals and birds.
Keep an eye out for some of the different species of terrestrial mammals from foxes to the industrious beavers that have dotted the area with dams and ponds. Also watch for cara-caras, Austral Parakeets, condors and other bird species.
Enjoy the joyful camaraderie while you sample an enticing collection of meats and cheeses accompanied by wine and other beverages. When everyone is ready, re-board your vehicle for the drive back to your ship in Ushuaia, enjoying expert commentary en route. The capital of Tierra del Fuego brims with history and culture. In fact, few places this remote are this inviting.
With a climate moderated by the Martial Mountains and the sea, colorful houses and a vibrant population of 82,000 hearty souls, this truly is an extraordinary part of the world. Founded in October of 1884, Argentina designated Ushuaia a penal colony in 1896, completed a jail in 1902 and housed inmates until 1947. Nowadays Ushuaia and Tierra del Fuego, a rough-hewn archipelago consisting of a main island (the largest in South America) and hundreds of lesser isles, is a popular stop on many a traveler´s itinerary providing countless memories and many cherished life-altering experiences.
