At the same latitude as Alaska, Tromsø is the capital of Northern Norway and an awe-inspiring island of intricate fiords and snow-capped mountain peaks. A hundred years ago, it earned the nickname, "Paris of the North" for its culture, intellectual pursuits and stylish fashions. Today, you'll find Tromsø just as exciting and innovating as your motorcoach drives around the island on a tour past the old city center, Lake Prestvatn, a scenic nature preservation area, and the Meteorological Institute.

Your first stop is the popular Polar Museum. Inside a warehouse dating back over 180 years, the museum celebrates the many exploits of explorers, hunters and researchers who used Tromsø as "The Gateway to the Arctic" between 1850 and 1930. The exhibits include photographs, films, vintage equipment and artifacts including skis, tents, scientific instruments and weapons and more.

The modern beauty of the Arctic Cathedral is your next stop. A visual masterpiece, the Cathedral's 114-foot high entrance and pronounced cross makes this landmark the city's most recognizable feature. The Cathedral's interior is bathed in warm and inviting light. Each chandelier, created in Czechoslovakian crystal, was crafted to resemble hanging ice formations. The vibrant-colored stained glass window, at 459 square feet and 75-feet high, covers the entire east wall and is one of the largest in Europe. Organ recitals and Midnight Sun concerts are performed during the summer months are visitors are welcome.

An exhilarating cable car ride up 1,300 feet to the top of Storsteinen Mountain is your last stop. Just across the bridge from Tromsø, the ride offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city, fjords, pine covered mountains and verdant valleys.

Special Notes

The church may close on short notice for funerals, weddings and other religious functions. In this case only a drive by the Arctic cathedral and a photostop from a distant location is possible. In the case Tromsø bridge is closed, an alternative route will be used including a tunnel drive. Since the alternative route results in longer drive time, the visits/sightseeing may be shortened. The second floor at the Polar Museum can only be accessed by a staircase. Due to ongoing construction at the cable car venue the roof platform is not available and the the venue is currently not wheelchair accessible.Guests will have to climb approximately 20 steps up a narrow staircase and therefore this is not suitable for guests with any mobility issues.
