WHAT YOU VISIT
Lipica Stud Farm
Thrill to the sight of prized Lipizzaner horses as they perform the Classical School of Riding at the Lipica Stud Farm in Slovenia. Ideal for families and equestrians, the visit also includes a meet and greet with the horses themselves during a tour of the stables. Upon arrival, you'll learn that farm has bred Lipizzaner horses for over 400 years and most commonly associated with Vienna's Spanish Riding Academy, founded in 1572 to provide training for the Hapsburg nobility and its cavalry. The Lipizzaner breed originally derives from the cross-breeding of Andalusian, Neapolitan and native Slovenian horses; today, the 300-hectare farm is home to 300 white Lipizzaner horses.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES
Since the 16th century these majestic animals have captured the imagination. During your visit, you may see mares and foals (which are born dark and turn gray as they age) frolicking in the pastures. During the performance, you can admire their skills at dressage and their ability in the aerial acrobatics known as "Airs Above the Ground."
WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
From Trieste you'll travel through a landscape of Karst, a landscape characterized by eroded limestone formations. A Slovene name given to all the amazing phenomena that dot the spectacular countryside, Karst can be found in almost half of the country. In addition to 8,000 known karst caves, there are also intermittent springs, disappearing lakes, and sinkholes.
