WHAT YOU VISIT
Aquileia
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Aquileia was founded in 181 BC and grew to become one of the largest and wealthiest cities in the early Roman Empire. A local guide will lead you on a stroll among the excavations of Roman ruins followed by a tour of its impressive Basilica. Originally built in the 4th century, it was restored between the 11th and 14th centuries in Romanesque and Gothic styles. Step inside and behold the colorful and intricate mosaics on the basilica's floor. Measuring 750 square meters (over 8,000 square feet), floor is the largest mosaic example in early Christendom.

Redipuglia War Memorial
Italy's largest War Memorial rises from the western face of Mount Sei Busi at Redipuglia, just inland from the Gulf of Trieste. Here, on monumental terraces, lie the remains of 100,187 fallen men and one female Red Cross worker and a final resting place for a staggering 60,330 whose names are unknown to this day.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES
The colorful and intricate mosaic floor of the Aquileia Basilica represents one of the most ancient and extraordinary expressions of the early Christian art form. Here, you can see a battle between the rooster and the tortoise, which represents the light (Christ) and the tortoise representing evil. And the eastern section is entirely covered with the representation of the biblical story of Jonah. While visiting the Redipuglia War Memorial, be sure to turn your camera towards the summit of Sei Busi, which offers outstanding views.

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
As you make your way through a cityscape of bustling streets and freeways from Trieste to Aquileia, it may be interesting to note that the area was once under siege by Attila the Hun.
