Board your motorcoach and travel from La Seyne sur Mer to the unique town of Aix en Provence. This charming city is the former medieval capital of Provence, and boasts elegant 18th and 19th century architecture, wide boulevards, charming sidewalk cafes, and wonderful shopping opportunities.
During your walking tour, discover the elegant Cours Mirabeau, a wide boulevard dotted with magnificent fountains, and lined with cafes and restaurants shaded by tall plane trees. Your guide will not fail to show you Paul Cézanne's, Aix's most favorite son and famed painter, favorite places such as the Brasserie Les Deux Garçons. It was there that the beloved artist used to spend some time with his friend Emile Zola on a daily basis. Close by is the Mazarin Quarter. Built in the 17th century, its grid pattern of streets is filled with lovely 17th and 18th century town homes where the well-to-do once lived. Today it is home to some of Aix's trendy boutiques and Museums. You will also view the stunning 12th-century cathedral Saint-Sauveur (Holy Savior Cathedral). From the 5th through the 17th centuries, the cathedral was built and rebuilt atop a Roman temple dedicated to Apollo. You will then take time to freely browse the markets, galleries and lovely shops before returning to your coach.
Back on your coach, you will head towards Marseille, France's second largest city after Paris. Nominated Europe's Cultural Capital in 2013, Marseille has much to offer. Your discovery of the city will begin with a panoramic city tour passing by the impressive Cathedral De La Major built in Byzantine style facing the newly celebrated Complex including the Mucem inaugurated in 2013. This museum, conceived by Rudy Ricciotti, is devoted to the history of European and Mediterranean Civilizations and is unique due to the incredible dark concrete net that covers two of its sides. The adjacent Villa Méditerranée, an international centre for cultural and artistic interchange, is partially constructed underwater. This outstanding site is linked to the Fort Saint-Jean and to the Panier, Marseille's ancient district, by spectacular footbridges.
During your tour, you will also drive along the Canebière, Marseille's popular boulevard and visit Notre Dame de La Garde Basilica. This renown Neo-Byzantine basilica, built between 1853 and 1864 by Espérandieu, dominates the city. The 46m high belfry is capped by a hudge gilded statue of the Virgin. It was consecrated on the 4th June 1864 and has been given the popular name of ' Bonne Mère ' ( Good mother ) over the centuries by the pilgrims who were seeking its protection.
You will be given free time on the Vieux Port 'Old Harbor ' for lunch on own in one of the many restaurants and cafés and shop in the lively city centre. After you have fully explored this delightful town, you will board the motorcoach for the relaxing journey back to La Seyne sur Mer, via the highway.
