Nature lovers, history buffs, photographers and inquisitive travelers alike will thrill to the opportunity to discover Tokushima's iconic landmarks during a four-hour excursion that showcases the city's manmade and nature-made beauty. To thoroughly enjoy your outing, be sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring along a camera to capture the sights.

Your adventure begins as you board your coach at the pier and drive through Tokushima past the bustling shops, businesses and restaurants to the symbol that defines the city - Mount Bizan. Rising over 900 feet from the heart of the city, the mighty mountain, named for the shape of a woman's eyebrow, is a popular spot for climbing, hiking and mountaineering.

When your coach approaches the base of the mountain you'll begin a drive up the southern slope, home to several shrines and temples; in fact, the foot of Mount Bizan is a part of the Shikoku Pilgrimage Route, the island's 88 temples associated with Kobo Daishi, the founder of Shingon Buddhism.

Once you reach the summit you'll disembark for an hour at the observatory. From the observation deck you have a bird's eye view over Tokushima and its picturesque surroundings. Get your camera poised for this dazzling panorama of earth, sea and sky ‐ if you're visiting during spring you'll see 500 blossoming cherry trees and in autumn the maple trees turn from yellow to orange and red. But every day of the year brings 360-degree views of the mountain's lush ferns, bamboo and grass. And on a clear day you can even see as far out to Awaji Island and distant Wakayama Prefecture on the shores of mainland Japan.

Photos taken, you'll drive back down the mountain, over the Yoshino River and on to Ryozen-ji Temple. Founded in the 8th century and rebuilt in the 1960s, the temple is the first of the 88 temples along the 745-mile long Shikoku Pilgrimage route. A yearly estimate of 100,000 pilgrims, known as "henro-san" dressed in traditional short white cotton coats, colored shoulder bands and broad-rimmed straw hats, walk (which takes two months to complete) or drive the trail, which loops around the island's four prefectures.

Once you've taken your memorable photos you'll climb back aboard your coach and return to your ship.
