WHAT YOU VISIT
Ostuni
Built atop a hill to protect from invaders, Ostuni is known as the "White City," for its famous whitewashed buildings that appear to cascade down the hillside. Adorned with colorful doors and window shutters, the Baroque-style residences line a labyrinthine maze of narrow cobblestoned streets. You'll also visit the 15th century cathedral, built in the late Gothic style (rare in Puglia, where most of the churches are austere Romanesque or ornate baroque). Perched on the highest hill of the city in the middle of the old town, its facade is noted for its fulcrum in the large central rosette, in which the Christ is surrounded by seven cherubs.
Alberobello
Around 1,400 trulli dating back to the 14th century pack the town's narrow streets. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, these ancient stone houses with conical roofs are remarkable examples of drywall (mortarless) construction, a prehistoric building technique that's still in use in the region.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES
Situated hilltop 200 meters (656 feet) above sea level, Ostuni boasts picturesque views of the azure sea and endless olive trees in the Itria Valley. While in Alberobello, focus your lens on the roofs that are embellished with painted symbols such as a cross or a heart pierced by an arrow, designed to bring luck upon the house.
LUNCH
Feast on lunch in the elegant atmosphere of an Apulian masseria (ancient-fortified farm-house).
SHOPPING
After the guided walking tour of Alberobello, enjoy some free time for shopping for gifts and souvenirs.
