WHAT YOU VISIT
Matera
The ancient town of Matera is famous for its "Flintstone"-inspired stone buildings known as sassi. Carved out of limestone hillsides and ravines, these unique caves are actually a complex of houses, churches, monasteries and shops that stretch out over 1015 hectares (2,510 acres). Noted by UNESCO as "the most outstanding, intact example of a troglodyte settlement in the Mediterranean region," many of the 1,500 cave dwellings date back to the Palaeolithic era. Walk along stone steps that snake their way around natural caves burrowed out of limestone. Occupied until 1960, the prehistoric dwellings may look like something out of the "Flintstones" but much of the elaborate stonework dates from the Renaissance, when many caves were adorned with new façades, or had their ceilings extended to make vaulted rooms.
