WHAT YOU VISIT
Taranto
Set on the Ionian Sea, the city of Taranto is known as the "Town of Two Seas," spread between Mare Piccolo (Small Sea) and Mare Grande (Large Sea). During this two-hour get-acquainted guided tour you'll stroll through the Old City beginning at the Piazza Castello, home to many of the city's most splendid sights such as the remains of the the 6th century BC Temple of Poseidon, the only Greek religious structure still visible in Taranto. The nearby Cathedral of San Cataldo is the oldest Apulian cathedral, built by the Byzantines in the second half of the 10th century. The tour's capped off with an outside visit at Castello Aragonese, an impressive 15th century fortress and a walk over the swing bridge that separates the old town from the newest part of the city. About 90 meters (295 feet) long, it was inaugurated in 1887 and overlooks a large navigable canal that unites the two seas. Then you're free to sightsee on your own before returning to the ship.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES
Imposing walls, turrets and a moat that once held seawater, the Castello Aragonese is a photographer's ideal subject. A walk into Castello Aragonese's main courtyard offers a look at the barrel-vaulted rooms that were once military barracks, royal stairs once used by visiting kings, gun placements, cannons and cannon balls.
WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
Just minutes from the pier, you'll travel a route once used by Aragon King Ferdinand I of Naples in the 15th century as he journeyed to Castello Aragonese.
