What you will visit:
Tangier
Standing guarding over the Strait of Gibraltar and gateway to Africa, Tangier is located in northern Morocco. While growing rapidly, it still possesses an intoxicating blend of colors and civilizations, a mix of Portugal, France, Spain and northern Africa. It has long been a place of fascination due to its rich heritage, exotic sights, stunning vistas and sandy coastline. Built into the slopes of rocky hillside, Tangier's old town (medina) is encircled by a 15th-century rampart and boasts the sultan's palace (now a museum of Moroccan art), the Great Mosque, lively souks, and a kasbah that has been the political and military bulwark since the 10th century. A haven for artists and writers, this multicultural community has also long been a refuge for diverse religions and cultures, and during the 19th and 20th centuries, it became a safe ground for international spies.
Kasbah
A must-see landmark while in Tangier, the kasbah, a former citadel, dates to the 10th century, and much remains intact. It is now a fashionable district but still maintains much of its original characteristics and architecture. A stroll truly transports visitors back to when it was the traditional residence of the sultan. A Key attraction in the enclave is the newly renovated Kasbah Museum displaying exhibits focused on the culture and history of the local neighborhood. It charms with a sunny courtyard and beautiful tiled mosaics.
The Grand Socco
A bustling central plaza surrounded by palm trees and anchored by a marble fountain and pretty flowerbeds, the Grand Socco is a lovely entrance to the medina. Street vendors selling spices and fresh produce, strolling musicians, tiny cafés and artisan shops offer a lively atmosphere, plenty of local color and numerous photo opportunities.
St. Andrew's Church
Completed in 1894 and consecrated in 1905, St. Andrew's Church is a stately structure built on land gifted to Queen Victoria by Sultan Hassan. The interior of this graceful Anglican church is decorated in high Fassi style. The Lord's Prayer written in Arabic hangs over the altar, and a cleft pointing to the direction of Mecca has intricately carved quotes from the Quran. Many famous dignitaries and British and Commonwealth soldiers who lost their lives fighting in North Africa during World War II are laid to rest in the church's graveyard.
