What you will visit:
Tetouan
Located in northern Morocco, Tetouan is one of the Morocco's major ports. It was of significance during the Islamic period and was a main connection point between Andalusia and Morocco. Spanish is still widely spoken here as well as French and Arabic. The Moorish Andalusian old city (medina) rises from a hillside and is famed for its gleaming white-walled structed, inspiring its nickname, the "White Dove." It is surrounded by thick stone walls and accessed through seven gates. Thirty-six mosques and sanctuaries are housed in this enclave, where the Jewish minority lives in harmony with Muslims. A host of heritage buildings, old-world artistry, labyrinthine alleys, souks (markets) and stunning vistas are all found inside the beautifully preserved medina, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
Museum Dar Sanaa
Just outside the medina, you'll find the Museum Dar Sanaa and the only official institution dedicated to the preservation of Moorish arts and crafts. Here, the artistic pursuits of the past are colorfully alive, with teachings in copper works, wood carving, silk embroidery and painting, all using generations-old techniques taught by master artisans. Admire the traditional textiles and artisan crafts.
What you will see along the way:
The Royal Palace of Tetouan is not open to visitors, as it is still in private use by King Mohammed VI. But as you drive by this magnificent residence, built in 1988, you can admire the Arab-Islamic architecture, its wonderfully ornate gate, and the urban stlye of Hassan II Square, which the palace anchors.
Refreshments:
In a traditional Moroccan riad (a bespoke hotel surrounding a garden), enjoy pastries and a refreshing mint tea.
