WHAT YOU VISIT
Carloway Broch
This Iron Age structure was built around 100 BC, and rises approximately 9 meters (29') high and 15 meters (49') in diameter. Believed to impress and defend, it's believed that they were the homes of tribal leaders and important members of the community and is one of the best preserved in the Hebrides.
Carloway was erected with two concentric walls of stone, with a stairway or gallery within the walls to the upper floors.
Gearrannan Blackhouse Village
Once a thriving crofting township and community, the village now stands as a testament to a time gone by. Blackhouses were built as a combined byre, barn and home, with an open peat fire where folk lived together with their animals until as recently as the 1970s. Step inside Arnol Blackhouse and gain a special insight into island life. In the museum, listen to an introductory talk about the history of this tradition, the village, the island and watch a weaving demonstration.
