WHAT YOU VISIT
Lews Castle
In 1844 wealthy merchant Sir James Matheson bought the Isle of Lewis and built Lews Castle on the site of the foundations of Seaforth Lodge, a hunting lodge dating to 1680. A guided walk will take you around the manicured grounds, a unique sight on the Western Isles, for which Matheson imported thousands of tons of soil. Hidden among the trees is the Woodland Center, which has a straightforward exhibition on the history of the castle and the island, and a café serving soup, salads and cakes.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES
Offering marvelous views over the azure waters of Stornoway, Lews Castle is acclaimed as one of the most magnificent castles on any of the Scottish isles. Constructed in the mid 1800's (1847 to 1857), the mock Tudor structure rises to two and three stories and boasts corbelled-out crenellated battlements and tall round and square turrets.
WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
From the pier your guide will lead you through the waterfront dotted with delightful fishing boats, across a bridge and a pathway along the coastline to a small jetty offering fantastic views of Stornoway's colorful houses across the bay.
