Moderate Activity
Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.
Departing your ship, you'll board your motorcoach and travel via underwater tunnel to Moster Island, a bucolic haven of green fields and grazing cows and sheep. Situated here, surrounded by centuries-old beech trees, you'll discover Utstein Kloster.
The monastery dates back to the 13th century and the best preserved in all of Norway. Dedicated to Saint Laurence, it was founded in its present location during the reign of King Magnus VI of Norway (1263-1280). It was a house of Augustinian monks. At its height, about 20 to 30 monks lived there. It was dissolved in 1537 during the Reformation and has been owned by the state since 1700. Today, it's a popular site for concerts, weddings, and conferences, and as a museum.
You'll tour the monastery cloisters and exquisite grounds. After your tour, you'll be entertained by a music recital performed in the monastery chapel.
Your tour concludes as you return to Stavanger via motorcoach where you can return to your ship, or you're free to remain in town, perhaps visiting Gamle Stavanger, or Old Stavanger, believed to be Europe's largest collection of wooden buildings. Walk through its cobblestone streets and you'll find the Norwegian Canning Museum that displays a typical factory from the 1920's. You can then return to your ship at your leisure.
An optional walking tour through the cobblestone streets of Old Stavanger is included if you wish. Return to port after this pleasant day
