WHAT YOU VISIT
Byrkjedalstunet
Surrounded by beautiful natural scenery, Byrkjedalstunet is situated in a former 1920's cheese dairy founded by the local farmers. In 1988, the production of candles began here, utilizing the old-fashioned method of dipping the candles into forms. Today exquisite quality candles are available to purchase alongside locally produced art and handicrafts. The next-door restaurant serves homemade Norwegian delicacies in a time-honored setting.
Optional Walking Tour:
Old Stavanger (Gamle Stavanger)
Best appreciated on a walking tour, Old Stavanger (Gamle Stavanger) is a well-preserved enclave with an extensive collection of 18th- and 19th-century wooden buildings, deemed heritage monuments.
WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
Traveling via motorcoach through Norway's fourth-largest city, you'll admire Stavanger's lively waterfront, narrow streets and charming neighborhoods as you venture along the picturesque Dirdal River and through the Dirdal Valley on an approximately one-hour drive to Byrkjedalstunet. Then, continue on through rural landscapes to Gloppedalsura. Your return will take you past the farming area of Jaeren and along the beautiful beachfront back to Stavanger, where you'll commence an approximately 1.5-hour sightseeing tour that showcases the highlights, followed by an optional walking tour of Old Stavanger.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
Gloppedalsura
Formed more than 10,000 years ago, Gloppedalsura is northern Europe's largest rockery, an impressive heap of boulders piled on top of one another at the end of a moraine. The other-worldly landscape makes for fascinating photographs.
Old Stavanger (Gamle Stavanger)
Keep your camera at the ready as you stroll through this well-preserved enclave and architectural showpiece of Norwegian history. Wooden houses line winding streets showcasing much of the charms of Stavanger when it was the canning capital of Norway.
SHOPPING
Byrkjedalstunet offers a large and extensive gift shop selling handmade candles, Christmas ornaments and displays, and many traditional Norwegian souvenirs all artfully displayed in a charming atmosphere.
SNACK
Traditional lapper (thick pancakes) are served in the quaint restaurant at Byrkjedalstunet. Lapper look like traditional American pancakes, but they are sweeter and are not usually eaten for breakfast. Enjoy this wonderful Norwegian treat, savoring their rich buttermilk flavor with sour cream and jam and accompanied by coffee or tea.
