What you will visit:
Split Old Town
Split is the largest Dalmatian city and combines urban living with a strong sense of history. Split was built for the emperor Diocletian in his retirement, and the soothing charms of the Dalmatian Riviera offer a heady blend of natural beauty and fascinating cultural sites to travelers today. The city itself is at least 1,700 years old, although recent archaeological research suggests that it might date back as far as the 6th century B.C. The Old Town is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and has celebrated a renaissance as the setting for the popular television series "Game of Thrones."
Klis Fortress
At the center of the cliff-side village of Klis is a medieval fortress built into a ridge overlooking Split and the Adriatic Sea. Its 2,000-year-old history began when it was originally built in ancient times by the Illyrian tribe Dalmatae. It later became the royal castle to Croatian kings and a fortress during the Ottoman wars. Today, it has experienced a renaissance in the popular television series "Game of Thrones" as the location for the fictitious city of Meereen. Visitors enjoy a thrilling walk around the fortifications and peruse the small church, a museum dedicated to its checkered past, a weathered cannon and a room dedicated to Game of Thrones memorabilia.
Vranjaca Cave
The Vranjaca cave, a protected geomorphologic natural monument, is located at the foot of the northern side of the Mosor mountain. Cave exploring, also known as spelunking, is all the more fun when you enter an underground chamber believed to be 65-70 million years old! The cave is 65 meters deep and separated into several chambers, which reveal evidence that people were living here several thousand years ago. The kids will enjoy looking for artifacts from ancient times and discovering the different color stalactite and stalagmite formations.
What you will see along the way:
The Vranjaca cave is located approximately a 30-minute drive from Split. As you travel, you'll pass through a series of lovely villages and take in the spectacular views of Dugopolje while climbing the steep elevation of Mosor mountain.
Lunch:
Savor delicious Dalmatian cuisine with a glass of wine, beer or mineral water at a first-class restaurant.
Shopping:
Head to Old Town for shopping on marble-paved Marmontova Street and in People's Square. Popular souvenirs include intricate Pag lace products, embroidered scarves in bright patterns, penkala (to commemorate Croatian pen inventor Slavoljub Eduard Penkala), cravat (silk ties) and the region's famous grape brandy.
