Split is the largeset Dalmatian city and combines urban living with a strong sense of history. The city itself is at least 1,700 years old, although recent archaeological research suggests that is might go back as far as the 6th century B.C. Thanks to its rich past, you will be introduced to many wonderful sights starting with the Diocletian's Palace, which is located in the Old Town and is almost a town in itself. Entering the palace through its impressive arches, take time to stroll around this 4th century achitectural feat that boasts grand open courtyards, restaurants, shops, magnificent stone columns and narrow cobbled lanes.
Wander in awe around this unique structure, making sure you find the time to tour St Dominus's Cathedral, that was also built by Emperor Diocletian, and is accessed through the palace. Named after Saint Duje, the patron saint of Split, the cathedral features an impressive bell-tower that was constructed in 1100 A.D. Walk up the stairs for amazing views of the city and Adriatic sea.
Your tour of the cathedral continues as you pass through the Temple of Jupiter, a 13th century structure that has been remodelled many times over the years and features imposing stone columns.
After immersing yourself in this ancient world, you will want to meander through the streets of the Old Town and browse the many shops, open-air markets and cafes. If shopping is a high priority, then head to Marmontova Street, a must not just for the prestigious shopping but also because it is paved with marble.
Other must-see locations on this gentle walking day include the historic People's Square, a bustling central point that features the imposing Town Hall building.
