The journey begins with a 45-minute scenic cruise aboard a high-speed fast ferry along North America's longest and deepest fjord to Haines. Enjoy spectacular views of cascading waterfalls and ice-sculpted peaks as your onboard guide provides engaging commentary and points out marine wildlife along the way.
Upon arrival in Haines, join experienced local guides as you board your expedition bus to follow the route of returning salmon along the Chilkoot River. Nestled between rugged glaciers and snowcapped mountains, the fertile Chilkoot Valley is home to generations of brown bears, bald eagles, mountain goats, marine mammals, numerous bird species and spawning salmon. Bird watchers, photographers, and curious explorers are continually impressed by the abundance of migratory and resident wildlife. Several stops along the route offer outstanding photo opportunities and engaging storytelling, including insights into Tlingit Indian legends and local history shared by your guide.
Visit a fish-counting weir where you may watch technicians tally migrating salmon as they return to their spawning grounds. Continue to Chilkoot Lake and set up powerful spotting scopes for close-up views of mountain goats in alpine meadows, bears along the riverbanks and nesting bald eagles. You can take photos directly through the scopes. If conditions allow, enjoy a refreshing nature walk beneath the towering canopy of the temperate rainforest into an ancient muskeg, offering a deeper appreciation for this unique and delicate ecosystem.
Your tour concludes with a narrated drive through historic Fort Seward and downtown Haines, where you'll enjoy a sack lunch before returning to Skagway by ferry.
