What you will visit:

Sand-Covered Church
Rising out of the sand dunes, the Sand-Covered Church (also known as the Old Skagen Church or the Buried Church) was built in the 14th century and was the largest church in the region. Beginning in the 1600s, the Great Sand Drift began, and the foundation had to repeatedly be dug out prior to services. It was permanently closed in 1795, and much of the church was demolished, but the remaining walls were quickly covered by the shifting sand. The tall main tower, which has been white-washed over the years, juts out from the sands, a brick monolith that remains to this day.

The Bascular (Vippefyret) Lighthouse
At this replica of an ancient wooden lighthouse originally built in 1627, you'll see Denmark's first bascule, which consists of a pivoting arm with a bucket where burning coal or wood was placed and then raised to steer ships clear of the dangerous surf and reefs. Used until the 1700s, it was closed in 1788, and the replica was constructed in 1913 in honor of Skagen's 500-year anniversary.

What you will see along the way:
The authentic beauty of Skagen comes to life when you discover its charms via bicycle. Your guided tour meanders throughout the picturesque town and takes you past the white picket fences that front pretty painted homes topped with red roofs. You'll travel out of town along a beachside route and past such highlights as the buried church and the lighthouse. Experience Grenen, an amazing natural wonder and the northernmost point in Denmark, where a sandbar was created by two seas.

Grenen
A natural phenomenon at Denmark's northernmost point, Grenen is a long sandbar that divides the Skagerrak and Kattegat straits connecting the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. It is possible to straddle the area and put a toe in each waterway, one calm and the other choppy. The very strong current strictly precludes swimming.

Photo Opportunity:
The coastal museum is comprised of small houses that cover a small glimpse of Skagen's history. It displays a charming grouping of fishermen's houses.
