WHAT YOU VISIT
Fortress of the Bear
Since 2007, this non-profit group has rehabilitated once-orphaned bears back to health and provided them a long life full of enrichment. From the safety of the large covered viewing platform you can watch experienced naturalists share their love and knowledge of these feared, yet most revered forest creatures. The three-quarter acre habitat is located about five miles from the town center, set against the Tongass National Forest.
Fjord Cruise
At Sawmill Cove dock, you'll board a custom-built catamaran equipped with comfortable seating for a journey through a glacier-carved fjord. While tracing the rugged coast, you'll see historic sites and clues to the important role the region's abundant natural resources have played – and still play – in southeast Alaska's economy. Restrooms and beverages are available in the main cabin. On the upper level, there is an open-air observation deck where you can look for wildlife.
Silver Bay Homestead
Established by the McGraw family dating back generations, the private Alaskan homestead offers a look at the challenges of living in this remote part of southeast Alaska. The naturalist guide will share stories about pioneers who came to make a living sustained by the area's abundant natural resources and futher elaborate on the area history as you gather around a crackling fire.
