What you will visit:
Fortress of the Bear
Step onto an elevated platform for an unparalleled view of Alaska coastal brown bears as they roam, play and interact in a spacious, naturalistic, yet safely enclosed habitat. This rescue and rehabilitation center provides a rare opportunity to observe these powerful creatures up close while
learning about their stories of survival. Expert handlers will share fascinating insights into bear behavior, their critical role in Alaska's ecosystem, and the dedicated conservation efforts that help orphaned cubs thrive.
Sitka National Historical Park
Immerse yourself in Alaska's rich cultural and historical tapestry at Sitka National Historical Park, the site of the 1804 Battle of Sitka-the last major conflict between the Tlingit people and Russian settlers. Admire an impressive collection of Tlingit and Haida totem poles, each intricately carved with ancestral stories, clan symbols, and cultural legends. Gain deeper insight into the Russian colonial period, which transformed Sitka into a bustling hub once known as the "Little Paris of the Pacific" due to its cosmopolitan influence and architectural elegance. A visit to this park offers a powerful journey through time, showcasing the resilience and artistry of Alaska's native cultures.
Alaska Raptor Center
Experience the inspiring world of avian rehabilitation at the Alaska Raptor Center, the state's only full-service hospital for injured birds of prey. This sanctuary provides expert medical care to over 200 injured eagles, owls, hawks and falcons each year, nursing them back to health for a return to the wild. Begin at the 20,000-square-foot Bald Eagle Flight Training Center, where you'll witness eagles regaining their strength as they practice flying, hunting and perching in a controlled environment. Continue to the outdoor enclosures, where the "raptors in residence"-birds unable to return to the wild-serve as educational ambassadors. If time allows, take a half-mile nature walk along the Indian River.
What you will see along the way:
As you travel through Sitka, enjoy stunning views of towering spruce forests, rugged coastlines and snow-capped mountains. Along the waterfront, watch for fishing boats, harbor seals and bald eagles. Passing through town, you'll glimpse Russian-influenced architecture, wooden buildings and the iconic St. Michael's Cathedral. Approaching the Fortress of the Bear, the landscape opens to reveal vast mountain views. Near Sitka National Historical Park, you'll follow the Indian River. At the Alaska Raptor Center, greenery and birds in flight signal your arrival at this unique wildlife haven.
