What you will visit:

Neapolis Archaeological Park
Excavation of this massive site began in 1952, and this remarkable archaeological park has yielded Siracusa's greatest concentration of ruins. The site contains three main areas: the stone quarries known as the Latomia del Paradiso, where captives were imprisoned following the 413 B.C. war between Siracusa and Athens; the 5th-century B.C. Greek theater, which is one of the largest and best-preserved theatres of the ancient world; and the 2nd-century A.D. Roman amphitheater where gladiators once pitched their battles.

Siracusa / Ortigia
Joined to the mainland by three bridges, the old town area is the historical center of Siracusa. The ruins of the Temple of Apollo greet visitors at the island's gateway and serve as the perfect introduction to a city rich in myth and history. The streets wind past Norman buildings, churches and baroque palaces, with charming houses and wrought iron balconies opening to sweeping views of the Ionian Sea. The central Piazza del Duomo is the site of the remarkable 17th century Cathedral of Siracusa, the city hall, located in the Palazzo Senatorio, as well as the Palace Beneventano del Bosco and the medieval Episcopal Palace.

What you will see:

Travel through the bustle of modern Siracusa from the ancient archaeological park to the hallowed streets of the historic Old Town. Ortigia is rich with the palaces of Sicilian nobility, including Palazzo Impellizzeri, Palazzo Bonanno and Palazzo Bufardeci. The streets are lined with delightful stone houses and sheltered squares. Pass by the elegant boutiques of Corso Matteotti, Ortigia's main and most elegant shopping area.

Photo Opportunities:

Arethusa Fountain:
At this iconic symbol of Ortigia, fresh water flows placidly over papyri plants, and ducks and fish make their home in its mythical waters.

Cathedral of Siracusa:
An exceptional example of the "Romanesque basilica" style of ecclesiastical architecture, the Siracusa Cathedral, once the golden limestone Temple of Athena in the 5th century B.C., stands proudly at the highest point of the island of Ortigia.
