Located on the northern coast of Sicily, the seaside city of Cefalú is one of the area's major attractions. And why wouldn't it be? Nestled between the stunning Madonie Mountains and the crystalline Mediterranean Sea, it features gorgeous beaches, breathtaking vistas, medieval streets and a Norman-Arab-Byzantine cathedral! Enticed? Then you'll definitely want to embark on this half-day, active, guided excursion that takes you on an up-close and personal walking tour of this spectacular city!
The adventure begins at your pier where you'll board an air-conditioned motorcoach for a scenic 47-mile drive through the Sicilian countryside. Step off your motorcoach and step back in time in Cefalú, a medieval city built on the site of an ancient Sicanian and Greek settlement. Accompanied by a knowledgeable guide you'll begin your walking tour by heading from the car park to town centre. At the center of the village stands the 12th century Norman Cathedral built under the reign of Roger II. The presbytery is covered with beautiful mosaics on a gilded background, displaying a surprising variety of color and forming an admirable expression of Byzantine art. Next you will enjoy nature's own palate of ocean blue and sunshine yellow, enhanced by the hues of honey-colored buildings and a gently weathered patina throughout the town.
Your travels through Cefalú will offer numerous photo opportunities. Among them: the imposing beauty of the 14th century mansion known as Osterio Magno or "Great Guest House". This beautifully restored structure was the legendary residence of King Roger II when he visited Cefalú. Then visit the Lavatoio, a 16th century wash-house. Descend a flight of stairs into a low-ceilinged cave-like room where water cascades from ornate spigots into bathing pools. Standing in this centuries-old place, it's not difficult to imagine a time when village women washed in its cool running waters fed by freshwater springs.
As your tour comes to a close, you'll understand why Cefalú - this city rife with history, architectural beauty and stunning collections of art and artifacts - is one of Sicily's most popular attractions.
