The rise and fall of some of the world's greatest civilizations have left an indelible imprint around Sicily. And the village of Piazza Armerina is no exception. The architecture in this charming town displays a who's who of conquering nations-Baroque-style monuments, Arab-influenced houses and grandiose palaces. However, it's the remains of one of its earliest occupants that has earned this magnificent attraction a spot on UNESCO's World Heritage List for its "supreme example of a luxury Roman villa."

Marvel at this splendid archeological masterpiece during a day devoted to exploring the awe-inspiring Villa del Casale, located just outside of Piazza Armerina. There will be a lot of walking so be sure to wear comfortable shoes and a hat. Bring a camera to capture each unforgettable sight.

The excitement begins as you board your coach at the pier. Once settled into your comfortable seat, with your camera at hand, you'll be ready to set off on a thrilling adventure.

From Catania you'll travel west into the heart of the island. Sit back and relax as mile after scenic miles passes by your window. About 90 minutes later you'll reach the centuries-old town of Piazza Armerina, which flourished during Roman times. As your coach passes by the town you can see the lovely 388-year-old Baroque church, which sits atop the highest hill.

But just outside of Piazza Armerina sits one of the most grandiose villas in Italy. Villa del Casale must have dazzled everyone when it was first unveiled in the early decades of the 4th century A.D., for Maximianus Herculis, who along with Diocletian, ruled the Roman Empire.

Once buried under centuries of mud and lava, the sprawling 11,482-acre villa was discovered in the 19th century, carefully restored and finally opened to the public in 2012.

Upon arrival you'll disembark and enter the park that surrounds the villa. Be prepared to stretch your legs and your imagination as you walk back in time to the glory days when senators, generals, and emperors from Rome ambled through this magnificent property.

First, you'll pass the well-preserved thermae, or Roman baths. From here you'll stroll through the courtyard and the vestibule and on to the rooms adorned with ancient columns, remains of frescoes, statues and stunning mosaics that depict wild animals, mythical heroes, and geometric designs. During your tour, be sure to look for the famous "Bikini Girls" mosaic that feature women in athletic competition. In addition to wall mosaics each of the villa's 40 rooms boasts a total of 37,674-square-feet of magnificent mosaic flooring.

After your tour, you'll sit down for a relaxing lunch before rejoining your coach for a contemplative ride back to port as you discuss your amazing and memorable day with your fellow travelers.
