Find out what makes Catania such a fascinating place to visit during this three-and-a-half-hour excursion. Learn why it's called the "grey city," why it has such a colorful cultural heritage, and why it's such a popular playground for history buffs and nature lovers alike.
Perfect for those who prefer little or no walking, this excursion through Catania and the coastline boasts plenty of views so be sure to bring your camera.
Your sightseeing tour begins at the pier where you'll board your comfortable coach. Sit back and relax as you make your way through Sicily's second largest city. Founded in the 8th century B.C. as a Greek colony Catania flourished in the 14th century as one of Italy's most important cultural, artistic and political centers.
However, the city center does not reflect its medieval successes. A catastrophic eruption in 1669 ravaged the inner city. Lava oozed down Mount Etna's slopes and eked its way to Catania swamping the city with molten lava; a devastating earthquake just 24 years destroyed the city's oldest neighborhoods.
Catania bounced back and rebuilt the old town in the highly decorative Baroque style complete with wide-open squares and avenues using the readily available material they had-lava. Today, the "grey city" is a living testament to its resilience. Enjoy an optional walking tour, or shop or explore independently.
Then, you'll head down the motorway and cruise along the coastline with Mount Etna ever present right outside your window. This stretch of seacoast not only boasts spectacular scenery but ancient myths, as well. It's here, according to Homer's epic "The Odyssey," that a Cyclops broke off enormous rocks from Mount Etna and hurled them at Ulysses and his men as they escaped on their ship. Today, the six-mile stretch from Acireale to Acicastello is known as "Riviera dei Ciclopi" or Riviera of the Cyclops.
Time permitting you'll have the opportunity to pass by Acireale. Located high above the rocky coast the town was built on old lava streams; in Roman times it was known as a spa town and the thermal baths are still used today.
Another Cyclops myth greets you as you begin your return to Catania. The one-eyed monster was jealous of a young man named Acis. One day out of anger the Cyclops turned Aci into the river that flows through many villages along the coast. But Acicastello, holds a more down-to-earth relic of its distant past-the ruins of a Norman castle. Built in 1076 atop a ridge of lava this once mighty fortress offers a perfect chance to stop, stretch your legs and take that perfect photo.
Back on board, you'll enjoy the drive back to the ship, soaking up the picturesque views of the coastline of the Cyclops.
