WHAT YOU VISIT
Chofu Castle Town
Dating back to 646, this castle town is the site of homes called monnagaya longhouses where high-ranking samurais once lived during the end of the Edo Period. One example is the Chofu Mori-Tei. Built between 1898 and 1903 by Mototoshi Mori, the 14th head of the Chofu Mori clan, this was the home of the last Daimyo of Chofu. The residence boasts a tranquil garden and pond and inside among the elegant rooms you'll find the room where the Emperor Meiji once stayed has been left intact.

Kozan-ji Temple
Founded in 1327, this historic temple is Japan's oldest example of Zen-style architecture, which combines Japanese and Chinese design features, and its Buddha hall is a recognized National Treasure. The site is known for its springtime cherry blossoms and its fall leaves, and where samurai Takasugi Shinsaku took up arms against the Tokugawa shogunate, which led to the Meiji Restoration. A bronze statue of Shinsaku on horseback can be found within the temple grounds.

Akama Jingu Shrine
Established in 1191 to commemorate six-year-old Emperor Antoku who died here along with his grandmother during the Battle of Dan-no-Ura between the Minamoto and Taira clans in 1185. Their graves along with other members of the Heike clan are buried here.
