WHAT YOU VISIT
Akiyoshidai Quasi-National Park
Formed 300 million years ago, this National Monument boasts the other-worldly Akiyoshidai Plateau that includes Japan's largest karst field, an area encompassing 130-square-kilometers (50-square-miles). The amazing phenomena known as karst, which is created when water dissolves in fusible limestone, is scattered across the rolling grassy plateau. Located at the foot of the Akiyoshidai Plateau is the jaw-dropping Akiyoshido Cave. Stalactites that can reach unbelievable heights, a bright blue underground lake and travertine terraces add to the mystical experience.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES
The rock pinnacles that jut sharply out of the Akiyoshidai Plateau can reach heights of two meters (six feet). Below ground in the Akiyoshido Cave, you'll find some of the largest stalactites in Japan; some can reach 80 meters (262 feet)! And you can't miss Hyakumaizara-a beautiful limestone formation consisting of over 550 plates and it is said that each plate is still growing.

SHOPPING
Mingle with the locals as you browse the stalls at Karato Market where fishermen sell their daily catch. Dating back to 1909 the market exports fish all over Japan. During your visit you may wish to purchase a delicious mixed seafood donburi rice bowl or individual pieces of sushi.

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
Sit back and relax as the approximate hour-long ride takes you through Shimonoseki's busy streets and into the picturesque countryside to Akiyoshidai Quasi-National Park.
