Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.
You'll board your motorcoach and travel across a landscape of peat and heather-covered moors to Scalloway, the former capital of the Shetlands.
Scalloway offers quite a colorful history. Patrick Stewart, 2nd Earl of Orkney built a castle in the late 16th Century to tighten his grip on Shetland. Known for his cruelty, he was hanged for his misdeeds in 1615. It's an oft-quoted comment on Patrick's ignorance that his execution had to be delayed to give him time to learn the Lord's Prayer. The tower house itself has been extensively restored over the past century, but nothing visible remains of the surrounding walls and buildings.
The Scalloway Museum features an exhibit on the 'Shetland Bus,' the nickname given to a secret fleet of boats that carried British agents to Norway to perform acts of sabotage against the Germans, who were occupying the country. On the return trips, the boats would carry refugees back to Shetland.
A short drive will bring you to Carol's Ponies, where you will visit the inquisitive, charming Shetland Ponies. Your host will give you a brief history about these beautiful creatures, and you have a chance to take a few pictures before re-boarding your motorcoach.
From Carol's Ponies you take a short scenic ride through the peat and heather-covered landscape, through the fertile Tingwall Valley, skirting the breath-taking Loch of Tingwall with its Norse heritage.
Your adventure ends with a picturesque return to Lerwick and your ship.
