You'll board your motorcoach and travel from the capital city of Lerwick, to the beautiful hillside vistas throughout the countryside. As your panoramic drive continues you will see that most of the fertile agricultural land is to be found in the central area of the island.
Your scenic ride takes you to Scalloway, once the capital of Shetland. Patrick Stewart, 2nd Earl of Orkney built a castle in Scalloway in the late 16th Century to tighten his grip on Shetland. However, he was a cruel Earl, and he was hanged for his misdeeds in 1615. It's an oft-quoted comment on Patrick's ignorance that his execution had to be delayed to give him time to learn the Lord's Prayer. The castle was never used again. . The tower house itself has been extensively restored over the past century, but nothing visible remains of the surrounding walls and buildings.
From Scalloway, you take a short scenic ride through the peat and heather-covered landscape, through the fertile Tingwall Valley, an area of uninterrupted views of farmland, small lochs and streams. Dotting the landscape, you will see sturdy-looking houses and the occasional church. From the comparatively tranquil landscapes of the Tingwall Valley, you will head towards Weisdale Voe and a contrasting landscape of barren hills stretching away towards the coast, arriving at the Shetland Jewellery Workshop, where traditional Shetland Jewelry is still hand crafted into the Celtic and Norse inspired fashions.
Your adventure ends with a picturesque return to Lerwick and your ship.
