What you will visit:
Obyggdasetur Islands Wilderness Center of Iceland
Travel into an authentic and serene hideaway at the edge of Northern Europe's biggest wilderness. Here, you'll step across an old wooden bridge and be transported to a simpler time at the expansive Wilderness Center extending across the highlands. Encompassing a series of authentic buildings and an abandoned farm, this living museum offers a fully immersive experience in nature. All of the buildings, interior décor and hands-on activities play a vital role in the experience, and the warm and welcoming hosts who lead the demonstrations embody the spirit of traditional Icelandic life.
What you will see along the way:
Seydisfjordur, a lovely town in the Eastfjords, is punctuated with multicolored wooden houses and surrounded by such lovely scenery as snowcapped mountains and plunging waterfalls. As your drive takes you out to the countryside, enjoy picturesque vistas of fertile farmland, narrow fjords, and your guide will point in the direction of Hengifoss (not seen from road), Iceland's second-highest waterfall at 419 feet.
Lake Lagarfljot
A sea serpent, called Lagarfljotsormurinn by the locals, is believed to inhabit the dark recesses of Lagarfljot. Surrounding the lake is Hallormsstadaskogur, the largest forest in Iceland,
Snack:
Wild ingredients, locally sourced foods from neighboring farms and fresh produce from the center's kitchen garden are artfully used in the preparation of authentic Icelandic cuisine. Sample very tasty smoked mountain lamb right from the smoke hut, and in the old-style kitchen, talk with your hosts as you watch them prepare your meal, served with local rhubarb wine.
