Hike to Hengifoss
Strenuous Activity
Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.
Your five-hour excursion into the unspoiled beauty of Iceland's countryside begins as you climb aboard your motorcoach at the pier. In order to make your adventure fun and safe, be aware that this is a medium level hike for experienced hikers and there are some rocky, uneven parts. It's also advised that you wear comfortable hiking boots or sturdy shoes, layered clothing and bring a waterproof jacket.
As you wind your way through Seyðisfjörður, you'll pass a number of Iceland's best-preserved and brightly painted wooden structures. These homes, businesses and public buildings were imported from Norway in kit form between 1895 and 1922.
Continuing on into the remote landscape of rugged mountains and pristine valleys, you'll traverse the mountainous Fjardarheidi Pass and follow the shoreline of Lake Lagarfljot. Gouged out over thousands of years by glaciers, the lake's bed lays 328 feet below sea level and legend has it that the lake's murky waters hide a sea serpent said to be similar to Scotland's Loch Ness.
Here, you'll disembark where your friendly and knowledgeable guide will lead you on your hike up from the main road to the cliff that overlooks Lake Lagarfljot. The stroll to reach Hengifoss is almost as beautiful as the falls itself. You'll be led on a grass and gravel path and everywhere you look are magnificent views that you'll have all to yourself. Steeped in the peace and quiet of the climb, you'll notice smaller waterfalls on the way up adjacent to the trail. About halfway up is the beautiful but smaller Litlanesfoss waterfall. It's believed that Thrasi Thorolfsson, one of the area's first Viking settlers, buried a treasure chest full of gold in the cave behind the waterfall.
As you approach the waterfall, you can hear the powerful roar of the water. Once at the top, you'll stop at the cliff overlooking the head of Lake Lagarfljót and behold the magnificent Hengifoss waterfall. At 420 feet high, Hengifoss is the second highest waterfall in Iceland. As you gaze out across the pristine wilderness, you can see Hallormsstadur Forest, the largest wooded area in the country, as well as the vastness of the never-ending blue sky. Marvel at the sight of the water plunging into the canyon below.
After soaking in the panoramic views you'll make your descent down to your awaiting motorcoach for your return trip to the pier in Seyðisfjörður.
