What you will visit:
The Natural Park of Cadiz Bay
Inhabited since ancient times, the Cadiz Bay area was once known for its salt flats. Salt was used to preserve fish and stores for long ocean journeys, and the bay has yielded this vital element since the time of the Phoenicians. Today, the park is known for its wildlife. It boasts a range of natural habitats including salt flats, marshes, tidal coves and beaches that are home to a wide variety of birds, like storks, sea eagles and flamingos.
Anchovy Point (Punta de Boqueron)
Anchovy Point lies at the end of the beautiful Playa del Castillo, a two-kilometer stretch of turquoise water and golden sand. The beach is framed by salt marshes where many species of birds dwell, and the water flows to land in gentle swells, making this lovely spot a perfect place for bird watching and wading in the warm surf.
Sancti Petri (otherwise known as the Island of Herkules)
Originally constructed in the 13th century, the castle of Sancti Petri has a storied history. Once one in a series of forts that guarded the area, the building was dedicated by the Phoenicians to their god Melqart. The Romans reassigned it to Herkules on their arrival. Built in the Moorish style, the castle was extensively restored and dedicated a cultural monument in 1949.
What you will see along the way:
As you travel along the peninsula, your drive will take you from the ancient walls of the old city at Cadiz along beautiful beach-side vistas. Shipping boats bob in the turquoise ocean-side harbor, and the protected Cadiz Bay is a sanctuary to many species of birds.
