For over 3,000 years, Spain has been the center of winemaking; or to be more specific, sherry wine, a fortified wine made from special white grapes grown only in Puerto de Santa María, Sanlúcar de Barrameda and Jerez - an area commonly known as the 'Sherry Triangle.' And under Spanish law, all wine labeled as sherry must legally come from one of these three towns.
During this three-and-a-half-hour excursion you'll view the many spectacular sights of Cadiz before traveling to Jerez, the center of winemaking since 1100 B.C. when the Phoenicians first introduced this elixir to Spain. Jerez is so synonymous with sherry that when the Moors occupied the city during the 8th century the town was named Sherish, the Arabic word for fortified wine. And during the Christian era the name was Anglicized to Jerez.
After boarding your air-conditioned motor coach travel through the historic and bustling streets of Cadiz while your friendly guide points out the many fascinating attractions along the way. Filled with Moorish, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque structures, Cadiz is a perfect reflection of the many cultures that have called this beautiful seaside city home.
You'll travel down Plaza de San Juan de Dios, one of Cadiz's busiest squares, and past the Town Hall, which was built between 1799 and 1861. Continuing on you'll see Cadiz Cathedral, one of the city's most iconic landmarks and visible from almost anywhere in Cadiz. Sitting on the site of an older cathedral built in 1260, the structure you see today began construction in 1772 but was not completed until 1838. The result is a building that expresses each era's architectural styles - a Baroque edifice with Rococo and Neoclassical elements.
Once you leave Cadiz, travel through the verdant hills that surround the picturesque town of Jerez. Some of the sights you'll see as you make your way to the Sandeman Cellars include the 230-year-old Domecq Palace and the Convent Church of Santo Domingo, built in the 13th century.
Continue on to the Bodega Gonzalez Byass, where you will have an explanation of the sherry making process. The Bodega produces some of Jerez's finest sherry including the ones that you'll be sampling - Fino, which is very dry with a light body, Cream, and Oloroso, which is richer in both flavor and body.
Your visit also includes free time to shop and purchase a bottle or two of sherry before boarding your motor coach and heading back to your ship in Cadiz.
