Easy Alghero & Cape Caccia
Easy Activity
Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.
We'll begin our tour in Alghero where you'll board an air-conditioned motorcoach and travel the scenic coastline with views of Alghero. We'll drive through Alghero for an orientation of the city and then continue along the Strada dei 2 Mare to Santa Maria la Palma. This 60-minute drive forms a loop from the coast north of Alghero back to the city, passing Porto Ferro, the Baja di Conte and Cape Caccia en route to Fertilia.
Have your camera ready, as we'll stop for photos in Calabona at the Piazzale Del Tro, which offers sweeping views of Cape Caccia. We'll hit Porto Ferro, a lovely crescent-shaped beach framed by dunes, rockery and dense vegetation. From the esplanade, you can see the watchtowers built by the Aragonese: Torre del Porticciolo. These 14th century fortified towers provide panoramic views of the rugged coastline and the Bay of Alghero.
During our tour, we'll stop at a local café for a 30-minute break for snacks and to get refreshed. Our journey continues along Porto Conte Bay. This bay is one of the largest natural harbors in the Mediterranean, providing shelter to ships through the ages.
On the western side of Porto Conte Bay is the lighthouse marking Cape Caccia, with two stalactite grottoes. The sculpted stalactite rocks create a forest of columns, clustered like organ pipes. We'll stop at a vantage point-just long enough for a photo opportunity of the famous Grottos of Neptune.
We'll also visit Nuraghe Palmavera (exterior visit)-the unique and mysterious Copper Age stone towers-and Sardinia's link to its prehistoric past. These round stone structures dotting Sardinia were erected by the Nuraghi culture during the second millennium B.C. There are over 7,000 such structures on the island, and they reportedly date from 1,500 to 500 B.C.
Once we reach Fertilia, a small town with an airport and gateway to the island, we'll take a 30-minute rest stop to stretch and refresh before heading back to the pier in Alghero, a 25-minute drive.
For tours that offer more in-depth exploration with actual visits to one or more sites, see the other options in this port.
