Your tour will start at the pier in Alghero where you'll board an air-conditioned motorcoach and travel 60 minutes north along the western coastline. En route to Nuraghe Palmavera, take in the wild flora and dramatic seascape of Sardinia's famed Rivera del Corallo named after the coast's vivid red coral cliffs. We'll pass by the ubiquitous macchia shrubs that cover the slopes and the productive cork oak groves.

We'll stop at Cape Caccia for a photo opportunity at its viewpoint. Graced with a lighthouse at its tip, the Cape's headland offers dramatic views of the Gulf of Porto Conte and the Alghero coast.

From Cape Caccia, we'll drive 30 minutes north to Nuraghe Palmavera and Sardinia's link to its prehistoric past-the unique and mysterious Copper Age stone towers. These round stone structures dotting Sardinia were erected by the Nuraghi culture during the second millennium B.C. There are over 7,000 such structures on the island, and they reportedly date from about 1500 to 500 B.C.

From a distance, a nuraghe looks like an inverted flowerpot made of enormous stones. Yet they had fairly complex layouts. A typical tower could be 20 feet in diameter with stone benches inside, stalls for animals and an altar at the entrance. There were often chambers on two levels including a winding staircase.

Palmavera boasts one of the island's largest sites. It's an impressive vision featuring a palatial white-stone structure with two towers and surrounded by the remnants of a prehistoric village of 50 round huts. Upon arrival, you'll have approximately 30 minutes to stroll these amazing prehistoric ruins.

Once back on board the motorcoach, we'll travel 30 minutes south to the pretty fishing port of Alghero. With an active harbor and fishing industry, the seafood here is of excellent quality and as fresh as can be found anywhere. You'll have 60 minutes in Alghero for touring and some free time. Your guide will take you on a walking tour within the walled old quarter to visit the Church of San Francesco. Marvel at a 14th century cathedral that took more than 200 years to be completed.

After the tour, you'll have time on your own to spend shopping or to further explore the town. Sardinia is known for its baskets, coral jewelry and local handicrafts. The nearest shopping area is located along Piazza Civica and via Carlo Alberto, about five minutes from the pier.
