WHAT YOU VISIT
Porto Palermo Castle
Overlooking the bay of Porto Palermo, the 19th century structure is located on a small island that's connected to the mainland by a small strip of land. The readily defensible fort was constructed in the shape of a triangle with walls 18-meters-high (60-feet-tall) and used by Ali Pasha of Tepelena during the Ottoman times, but local legend holds that the present structure sits atop the ruins of a Venetian stronghold.
Himara
Surrounded on all sides by mountains or sea, this charming village is well known for its warm, sunny climate, and beautiful Spille, Llamani, Potami, and Livadhet beaches, and the unwavering hospitality of the locals. Himara is also a cultural center where Albania's traditional polyphonic singing is heard.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES
While visiting Porto Palermo Castle, be sure to walk up the stone stairway that leads to the terrace where you'll find five survey towers and amazing views over the Ionian Sea, the rocky coastline and the mountains.
SNACKS
Following a short walking tour of Himara, you'll stop for a cheese sandwich, cheese pie and a soft drink or a sampling of brandy known as "raki."
WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
En route to Porto Palermo Castle, you'll pass through the territory of the largest Naval base in Albania. Not surprisingly, during the communist era this region was closed to visitors.
