Spend an exciting half-day excursion to one of the oldest towns on the island. Used as a port in 1502, today, Puerto de la Cruz enjoys a reputation as a laid-back charmer with plenty of attractions to keep you entertained. Before you board your air-conditioned motorcoach be sure to wear comfortable clothes and walking shoes and bring along a camera to capture the day's fun.

After leaving port you'll travel north from Santa Cruz, through the old capital of La Laguna and continue passing through Tacoronte to the Orotava Valley. You'll continue to the picturesque town of Puerto de la Cruz. This lush seaside village has been Tenerife's premier resort since the turn of the 19th century when it was originally known as Puerto de La Orotava. At the time, it was developed as a port for the wealthy town of La Orotava, exporting sugar and wine to the New World. Once you arrive, you'll have free time to discover the appeal of this town for yourself. May we suggest strolling to the colonial part of town? Here, you'll find narrow cobbled streets lined with many well-preserved Spanish colonial buildings.

Over by the water you'll find Jardin Beach, a famous beach filled with palm trees and resort hotels. Nearby is Castillo San Felipe, one of the four ancient forts that defended the city. Constructed between 1599 and 1604, it served as a defensive base against pirates and other invaders.

Visit the Orchid Garden, founded in 1774, and reputed to be the oldest garden in Tenerife. This calm and tranquil place contains many different green spaces, water features, and an orchid walk. The property has been owned by British families for hundreds of years, and even contains a garden tearoom where you may relax and enjoy a cup of English tea.

Not to be missed is Nuestra Señora de La Peña de Francía, Puerto de la Cruz's main church. Residing in the quaint and appropriately named Plaza de la Iglesia (Church Square), the church was completed in 1697 and the neo-Gothic tower was constructed in 1898. The lovely interior holds a main altarpiece from 1710, which was recently restored, and the image of the Madonna dates to 1621.

After sightseeing you may wish to head over to Plaza del Charco in the town center. Known for its restaurants and cafés, it's a perfect spot to people watch and enjoy a glass of sangria while the quaint promenade offers a selection of high-end boutiques and souvenir shops.

Once you've completed your journey through Puerto de la Cruz, you'll board the motorcoach and return to your ship.
