WHAT YOU VISIT
La Laguna
Founded in the late 15th century, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is noted as "a living example of the exchange of influences between the European culture and the American culture." Among the graceful 17th and 18th century colonial houses and convents along Calle Obispo Rey sits El Patio Casa de Los Capitanes, built for the captain generals who once governed the city. Step into the beautiful internal courtyard for a glimpse into a traditional Canarian Island mansion. Minutes away is the pretty tree-lined square Plaza del Adelnatado, home to the Town Hall, municipal courts and the humble Hermitage of San Miguel Arcángel.
Garachico
Dating back to the end of the 15th century, Garachico was a key port for commercial traffic between Europe and the Spanish colonies in the Americas. As one of the oldest villages in the Canary Islands, its typical Canarian architecture was awarded the Fine Arts Gold Medal by King Carlon I for its artistic and historic heritage. A stroll through Garachico's Old Town reveals traditional, colorfully painted houses and cobbled streets like the Plaza of La Libertad, the main square. Another attraction is Castillo de San Miguel, a 16th century fortress. Covering 6,000 square meters (19,685 square feet) of land, the fortress features main towers that are more than 16 meters (52 feet) tall. The entrance to the fortress is decorated with historical armor, swords, chests, and scrolls of the medieval era.
Icod de Los Vinos
This 18th century town boasts Plaza de Andrés de Lorenzo Cáceres, a town square that is considered the most beautiful in the Canaries with lovely old houses built in traditional Canarian style. Among the fountains and quaint Church of San Marcos sits the eye-catching spiky tree known as a dragon tree, believed to be 3,000 years old.
Puerto de la Cruz Botanic Garden
Established in 1788 by Royal Decree, the garden was designed to form an area where plants, shrubs, and flowers brought by the Conquistadors from the New World could acclimate to Spanish soil. Many of the plants in the gardens today are the original specimens planted before or just after the facility opened. The centerpiece is a huge South American fig tree whose enormous branches and roots have created an outlandish treehouse.
