WHAT YOU VISIT
Old San Juan
In 1508, Ponce de Leon arrived and established the first settlement; just 13 years later, the site was moved to what is today Old San Juan. To get a feel of what life was like nearly 500 years ago, your guide will escort you along streets that are paved with blue cobblestones. Originally conceived as a military stronghold, this seven-block area boasts over 400 carefully restored 16th and 17th century Spanish colonial buildings. Your stroll ends at a beautiful local restaurant with a charming colonial atmosphere for a culinary experience.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
Among the many celebrated sites you'll see, one of the most iconic is the San Juan Cathedral. Originally constructed in 1521, it was rebuilt in 1540, making it the second oldest cathedral in the Americas. Large by colonial era standards, it is typical Spanish Colonial architecture, with a simple white façade crowned by saintly statues. Much of its current size was due to later expansions.
LUNCH
Puerto Rican cooking is a multi-cultural event with Spanish, African and Taíno flavors all mingling together to create a one-of-a-kind cuisine. After a warm welcome of Puerto Rican hors d'oeuvres, the chef will demonstrate how to prepare mofongo, Puerto Rico's signature dish of deep-fried cassava or green plantains mashed together with other ingredients such as as garlic and other seasoning to later be paired with delicious creole chicken. Also on the menu is a mojito cocktail made with rum, mint, lime juice, sugar and splash of tonic. Then, you'll sit down to this hearty and delicious lunch.
SHOPPING
On your way back to the ship, you may prefer to linger in the shopping district and purchase Puerto Rican coffee, crafts, jams and spices, designer clothing and jewelry, and unique pieces of art.
WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
The friendly and informative guide will lead you through important historic sites such as the San Juan Gate, the Princess Pathway and Prison, the Roots Fountain, Museum of Doña Fela, the Rogativa statue, and Plaza de Armas.
