What you will visit:
Fisherman's Wharf
San Francisco's waterfront was transformed during the Gold Rush, when ships crowded the bay with prospectors and supplies bound for the booming city. It later developed as a commercial fishing harbor, with the first state-owned Fisherman's Wharf established in 1884. Today, the Wharf is a lively waterfront neighborhood where fishing boats share the harbor with sightseeing vessels, and seafood stands, shops, and attractions line the piers. Take in views of Alcatraz Island and the Golden Gate Bridge. The USS Pampanito, a World War II submarine, is also docked here on Pier 45. And be sure to snap a photo of the wild sea lions that began gathering on K Dock after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. They have become one of the Wharf's most popular sights.
Ghirardelli Square
Marking the western edge of San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf district, Ghirardelli Square occupies the historic former Ghirardelli chocolate factory. When chocolate production moved to San Leandro in the 1960s, local investors purchased the property, helping save the industrial complex from demolition. The former factory buildings were then repurposed while preserving the historic character of the site. Today, the square is home to specialty shops, restaurants, and the Original Ghirardelli Chocolate & Ice Cream Shop. Wondering how to pronounce Ghirardelli? For years, a lively parrot at the chocolate shop reportedly greeted visitors by squawking, "Say Gear-ar-delly," offering a phonetic lesson in pronouncing the famous name.
What you will see along the way:
One of America's most picturesque cities, San Francisco is famed for its cable cars, fog-enshrouded bridge, legendary hills, mix of Victorian architecture and free-spirited charms, plus all the hustle and bustle of a world-class city. Along the northern waterfront, historic piers recall the city's maritime past, while fishing boats waterfront attractions line the pier. San Francisco Bay provides the backdrop, with its shipping channels, islands, and waterfront skyline.
Tastings
At Fisherman's Wharf, enjoy clam chowder served in a sourdough bowl, pairing the neighborhood's long seafood tradition with San Francisco's famous sourdough, baked in the city since the Gold Rush era.
