What you will visit:
Kayak the Caves of La Jolla – Double Kayak
Your experience begins at the edge of the La Jolla Ecological Reserve, where you'll be fitted with a life vest and helmet before receiving a comprehensive safety briefing and paddling lesson. Wetsuits are available for an additional cost. Once prepared, launch from the beach and paddle through small breaking waves into the protected marine sanctuary. The route covers approximately two square miles and passes through five distinct marine environments, including sandy shallows, rocky reefs, kelp forests, sandstone sea cliffs, and deep-water canyons. From your double kayak, view the Seven Sea Caves and striking formations such as Sunny Jim's Cave, Arch Cave, and Clams' Cave from the water. Sea cave entry is dependent on ocean and weather conditions and is not guaranteed.
What you will see along the way:
La Jolla's coastal waters provide opportunities to spot an array of marine life as you paddle through the reserve. Look for California sea lions resting along the rocks, bright orange Garibaldi swimming among the reefs, and harmless leopard sharks cruising through the shallows. Shovelnose guitarfish and dolphins may also make an appearance, while kelp forests, rugged cliffs, rocky formations, and sea caves create an ever-changing backdrop along the route.
